cave story
Cave Story was the second indie game I played on my 3DS after VVVVVV (a game very deserving of its own exhibit). All throughout my time playing it, my biggest thought was "Man, I wish I had picked this up sooner!"
This is the game nerds like me love to wax poetic about online, so I'll spare you the refrain about how it's grandfather of indie games, how impressive it is that it was all made by one guy, etc. What you need to know is that it's a really fun Metroidvania!
The maps in this game are enormous, with plenty of secrets to find and dozens of different enemies. On top of that, you've got a variety of weapons to choose from that can't all be used in a single playthrough, creating some very interesting differences in how you can approach some late-game areas. Personally, I'm a Snake main for life.
Combine that with the relatively slow pace of gameplay and a level-up/level-down system that rewards skillful positioning, and you've got action that always feels fresh without being overwhelming.
The story and presentation are what really take Cave Story to the next level, though. These huge levels are actually underground caverns inhabited by both natural fauna and the experiments of a mad scientist. Or two.
Unravelling the mystery of the cruel Doctor, finding a partner on a mission, and protecting some adorable bunny people all await you.
The music is next-level as well—I challenge you to find one person who's finished Cave Story and doesn't find themself humming a track from the game every now and then!
The game is available on PC as freeware with a fan translation, or as an officially translated "Plus" version on PC and Nintendo systems. Both are great!
You can also check out doukutsu-rs for PC and Android—it's a drop-in executable that adds enhanced graphics and control options.
